Residential Waste

Waste and recyclable material should be sorted at home and will be collected at the curb through the weekly collection service.

  • Garbage must be at curbside no later than 8:00am;
  • Garbage must be in a clear garbage bag (anything other than clear are not acceptable), not kitchen catchers or super-market sized bags;
  • Each bag should not weigh more than 50 lbs;
  • A limit of 6 garbage bags can be set out each collection day;
  • Household Hazardous Waste SHOULD NOT be amongst your garbage;
  • Business waste service NOT provided by the Town of Buchans. Waste disposal is the responsibility of the individual business.

For bulk items (e.g. furniture, appliances, scrap wood/metal, etc.), the Town offers an annual cleanup service in the spring - usually between late May-early June. Check our Facebook or look for notices fr more details.

Recycling

Residents in Buchans can sort their recyclables from their garbage for convenient curbside pick-up, which takes place every second Wednesday of of each month. By recycling applicable materials you are having a positive impact on keeping waste out of the regional landfill and will help protect this place we love so much. Please do your part by learning how to properly sort the waste you create.

Bottles and aluminum cans can be returned to the Recycling Depot located on Main Street in Buchans. By doing so you will receive a refund on your bottle/can deposit, or you can choose to donate your refund to support the Buchans Volunteer Fire Department.

Snow Clearing

The Town of Buchans receives 360 cm of snow on average every year. Town staff work hard to clear our streets and sidewalks to standards approved by Councilur top riority is to ensure emergency vehicle access for residents.

Please note: It is a violation of Section 163.3 of the Highway Traffic Act to throw or push snow into the street. Residents are expected to pile snow on their own property.

In winter, our parking restrictions are in place to make sure plows can clear our streets safely and effectively. Please refrain from parking on the street in winter, especially during snowfall, to avoid fines and/or vehicle removal.
