Buchans and the surrounding area has numerous attractions and year-round activities for residents and visitors of all ages.

Buchans Miners Museum

Take a journey back in time and discover Buchans in its heyday. The Buchans Miners Museum is open for you to explore in the summer months (check with the Town office for days and times), with historical displays on mining, hockey, and everyday life.

The Mudhole

Take a quick hike down to the where the Buchans River runs between the rocks and forms pools for you to enjoy a refreshing dip or catch a little sun. Wear swimming shoes and bring your towel. Please take out what you bring in, as this area is not staffed, to help keep it tidy and deter the wildlife.

Miners' Trail

Buchans has a vast network of hiking trails left behind by historic mining activity. The Town is in the process of modernizing the trail system, including signage and a lookout installed in 2023 on Ski Hill (Laycock's Lookout).

Beothuk Lake

Beothuk Lake is the second largest fresh body of water in Newfoundland. At the landing, enjoy swimming, beach combing, boating, fishing, or take in the natural beauty of this historic area. Home of the Beothuk Indians and the Indian Point National Historic Site. PLEASE NOTE: This is an unsupervised lake. Use at own risk.

Hunting & Fishing

Central Newfoundland is ideal for hunting and fishing, and Buchans is located in the heart of the action.

Snowmobile and ATV

Buchans is second to none for outdoor activities, and is home to one of the best snowmobile and ATV trail networks in the province. Being adjacent to Beothuk Lake, the Buchans Plateau, and the Gaff Topsails makes Buchans a top-tier destination for outdoor enthusiasts!

Cross Country Ski Trails

In winter, the network of hiking paths and woods roads make for great cross country skiing, with trails often groomed by local enthusiasts on a volunteer basis. Skiing conditions are generally ideal between the months of January and April.

Indoor Winter Activities

Buchans has long been a hotbed for winter activities such as ice hockey, skating, and curling. So get ready to lace 'em up or grab your broom and enjoy what Buchans has to offer!

Indian Point Beothuk Interpretation Site

Only a 30 minute drive away, the Indian Point Beothuk National Historic Site is in the area where Mary March was captured and later returned for burial. Interpretation boards tell the story of Beothuk life at Red Indian Lake and the artifacts that were found on this site. The site also offers the opportunity to visit reconstructions of a traditional Beothuk mamateek and smoke house.
